Are You Neglecting Yourself?: The 6 Types of Self-care You Need

Everyone needs self-care right? Yes, of course. We all need self-care, but did you know that self-care is a verb? So, let’s talk self-care; bullshit free.

Self-care is giving your mind, body, and soul what you need every day. Sounds simple but you may find yourself feeling burnt out or even guilty because you are lacking compassion and feel like you are not doing enough self-care.

If you are wondering, yes, you can overindulge in specific self-care practices and neglect others. Self-care is so much more than taking care of your physical body. You have a mind, a heart, a spirit that needs just as much attention.

Yes, everyone needs self-care and there are intentional ways that you can make all the types of self-care a priority to give yourself credit for all you do but also understand that there are more ways to take care of yourself beyond pampering and physical activity. Are you neglecting a specific type of self-care? If so, prioritize it. To self-care, is to do. So, do something. You deserve it. Take care of you better, but be compassionate with your self-care and stop putting so much pressure on yourself by giving yourself the credit for all you do.

Not everyone has the same privilege and knows how to take care of themselves. Not everyone knows what they need, here and now, to feel well taken care of. Of course we all know we need food, water, movement, but we also need safety and equity to take care of ourselves in the best way, but not everyone is afforded that privilege …

Racism and discrimination, food deserts, poverty, unaffordable health care, childcare, and physical self-care facilities; a society that values physical health over mental health, poor education systems and communities with unequal opportunities … these are a few of the many reasons why many do not know how to practice self-care and how our mood is impacted by our society — which can cause self-neglect and the devaluation of life.

I hope you find the beneift of this information and understand that you deserve to give yourself more credit for the self-care that you are able to practice and maintain. We are all doing our best and changing our perspective around self-care can shift how you see yourself and how to prioritize taking care of yourself.

    1. Thank you for reading and for your transparency. We all get there at times but you deserved to be taken care of in the best of ways

  2. I absolutely love this post. I always try to do at least one thing every week the contribution to my mental, physical and emotional health. I recently started meditating and I’m so happy because I’m getting the hang of it now ☺️☺️

    1. Thank you so much. I absolutely agree with you that that emotional and mental self-care is so important and those types of care are the least talked about. Thank you for sharing and for reaching out. I appreciate you.

  3. I really enjoyed this post. Thanks for writing. 🙂 I’m trying to use my 20s to work on caring for myself better so I can be a better role model for my future child or children, esp if I have a daughter. I don’t want her growing up with the self esteem issues I had as a teen.
