Black Girl in a White World

I brush, pick, twist, curl, braid, and lock my hair…
I switch, bounce, tap, and rock my hips…

My smile may be wide, but my heart is too!
My eyes may be broad, but my mind is too!
I talk loud, because I am passionate!
I walk proud, because I am going somewhere!

My tongue may be quick, but my feet are steady!
My mind may think differently, but my blood is the same!
I fight for my equality…
I go to war for the equality of others…

No, you may not touch my hair…
No, I can’t teach you how to dance…
No, I am not angry…I just don’t respond well to bull s***

I am curvaceous!
I am beautiful!
I am strong!
I love hard!

My smile may be wide, but my heart is too!
My eyes may be broad, but my mind is too!
I talk loud, because I am passionate!
I walk proud, because I am going somewhere!

I brush, pick, twist, curl, braid, and lock my hair…
I switch, bounce, tap, and rock my hips…

  1. So I just saw a comment you left on my blog post back in December about the struggles we’ve had here in Baton Rouge, LA and you left me the link to this poem.

Say it loud, girl. BE PROUD of who you are. Don’t let anyone dim your shine.
